THE TATTOO PROCESS

A little guide to getting tattooed by Fae Tanne.

Whether it's your very first tattoo or you've been collecting them for years, I want you to feel comfortable, informed and excited about the experience. Getting tattooed is personal, and I believe the process should feel just as meaningful as the finished piece.

Here's everything you need to know, from your first idea to your healed tattoo.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Every tattoo I create is an original piece of artwork, designed with my own artistic expression in mind.

You can book a custom design, choose from my available designs or explore a freehand session, where the artwork is created directly on your body. Before booking, I recommend taking a moment to explore my portfolio to get a feeling for my style or check all available designs on my Instagram @fae_tanne.

You don't need to have everything figured out. An idea, a feeling, a few references or even just a placement can be enough to get started.

If you're unsure which session to choose, you're always welcome to reach out to me on Instagram @fae_tanne.

BOOKING YOUR APPOINTMENT

You can book your appointment directly through my website by choosing the session that best suits your tattoo idea.

During the booking process, I'll ask you to share a little information about your tattoo, including:

  • Your idea or concept

  • Approximate size and placement

  • Reference images or inspiration

  • Any additional details you'd like me to know

The more information you share, the easier it is for me to understand your vision.

A non-refundable deposit is required to secure your appointment. This will be deducted from the final price of your tattoo.

The final price is based on the individual design, size, placement and complexity rather than simply the length of your appointment.

FREE CONSULTATIONS

Not quite ready to book a tattoo? That's completely okay.

I offer free 30-minute consultations for anyone who would like to talk through their ideas before committing to an appointment.

A consultation can be especially helpful if:

  • It's your first tattoo and you have questions about the process

  • You're unsure about the size or placement

  • You have several ideas you'd like to explore

  • You're considering a larger or more personal project

  • You'd simply feel more comfortable meeting me beforehand

There's no pressure to book a tattoo afterwards.

The consultation is a space for us to get to know each other, explore your ideas and make sure we're a good artistic match.

You can book your free consultation through my online booking system.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

For custom tattoos, I usually prepare your design before your appointment and send it to you the day before, so you have time to look at it.

The design is a starting point for our collaboration, and we can make adjustments together when you arrive.

I want the artwork to feel right for both you and your body, so we'll take the time needed to find the right size, placement and composition.

For freehand sessions, the process is a little different. Instead of working from a finished stencil, I'll draw directly onto your skin, allowing the design to follow your body's natural shapes and movement.

Nothing gets tattooed until you're completely happy with the design and placement.

PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT

A little preparation can make your tattoo experience much more comfortable, especially if it's your first time.

Before your appointment:

  • Get a good night's sleep

  • Eat a proper meal beforehand

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your session

  • Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed

  • Avoid sunburn or irritating the skin beforehand

You're welcome to bring snacks, water, headphones or anything else that helps you feel comfortable.

Please let me know beforehand if you're feeling unwell, have any relevant skin concerns or take medication that could affect the tattooing process. Don't stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

ARRIVING AT THE STUDIO

My private studio is located in Copenhagen, and you'll receive the address and practical information before your appointment.

When you arrive, we'll start by going through your design, discussing the placement and making any final adjustments.

I'll explain the process and prepare the equipment and tattoo area using appropriate hygiene procedures.

If it's your first tattoo, I'll walk you through everything before we begin, so you know what to expect.

There is no need to feel nervous about asking questions. No question is too small.

DURING YOUR TATTOO

Once you're happy with everything, we'll begin tattooing.

The sensation is different for everyone and depends on the placement, duration and your individual pain tolerance.

Most people describe it as a scratching, stinging or vibrating sensation.

It's completely normal to feel nervous, especially during your first tattoo.

We can take breaks whenever needed, adjust your position and check in throughout the session.

You never have to push yourself through discomfort just to finish faster.

Your comfort and consent are always a priority.

A SAFE & COMFORTABLE SPACE

I want my studio to feel like a welcoming, respectful and judgment-free environment.

Everyone has different needs, and there's no single right way to experience a tattoo appointment.

You're always welcome to let me know if you prefer:

  • A quieter appointment or less conversation

  • Extra breaks or time to process information

  • Clear explanations before each step

  • Adjustments for sensory sensitivities

  • Specific communication preferences

  • Additional privacy or support with feeling comfortable

You can share any preferences or accessibility needs in the booking form, or contact me privately beforehand.

You never need to explain more than you're comfortable sharing.

You're also welcome to read my Safe Space Guide for more information about how I approach comfort, consent and accessibility in the studio.

AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT

Once your tattoo is finished, I'll clean and protect the area and explain how to care for it during healing.

You'll receive aftercare instructions so you know what to expect over the following days and weeks.

A fresh tattoo is essentially a healing wound, so proper aftercare is important for both your skin and the final result.

During healing, it's normal to experience some redness, tenderness, itching, peeling and changes in how the tattoo looks.

Avoid picking at the skin, scratching or exposing the healing tattoo to unnecessary irritation.

Healing time varies, but the surface of the skin often takes around 2–4 weeks to settle, while deeper healing can take longer.

If you notice spreading redness, worsening pain, pus or fever, seek medical advice.

HEALED TATTOOS & TOUCH-UPS

Every person's skin heals differently, and tattoos naturally change slightly as they settle into the skin.

Once your tattoo is fully healed, you're always welcome to send me a photo of the result.

If an area needs a little extra attention, a touch-up is included in the tattoo price if you contact me within a months efter your session.

A LITTLE NOTE FOR FIRST-TIMERS

You don't have to know anything about tattoos before coming to me.

You don't need to know the technical terms, have a perfectly developed idea or pretend you're not nervous.

My job is to guide you through the experience, answer your questions and help turn your idea into something that feels right for you.

Whether you're ready to book or would rather start with a conversation, you're always welcome here.

With love,

Tanne ♡
